This extraordinary pair of shoes dates back, as far as I can tell, to sometime between the 1830s and 1850s.
Museum deaccession, numbered
In celadon green silk faille with kid leather insoles and lining at the backs, they feature square toes and a curved heel. Gathered at the front, probably missing some kind of original rosette or other adornment.
They appear to be hand stitched, with some possible machine stitching at the heels.
Original paper labels still partially present, indicating these were made by “A la Providence” shoe company and sold by the Gartrell company at 352 St. Honore, Paris.
Leather soles—if there is a differentiation between the left and right shoes, it’s subtle. Soles shoe almost no wear.
