This is an old, original oil-on-wood painting; we acquired this 20+ years ago from an estate sale, and we don't know its provenance. We believe it was painted in the mid to late 1800s.
It depicts a town square in an old-world village, possibly in Germany or the Netherlands, where a group of Gypsies or traveling entertainers has arrived with a camel, monkeys, and a performing bear. The curious townspeople are looking out from their windows.
We have been unable to find a definitive answer to the question of the artist's name, which looks like it could be H. or L. Schaumann or Schulman. The painting is similar to works by Karl Stuhlmüller, who created market/town scenes of villages and small towns in Germany and Austria.
11" x 8 1/4" x 1/4" thick.
Excellent condition with some light surface wear and some small scratches; please see photos for more condition details and contact us with any questions.
