This was a specialized kind of "sad iron", used to press the fluted ruffles on linen cuffs and collars and other trim. set includes heating base with lid, removable heating plate and plate roller. The base is Cast iron with a nickel-plated hinged lid, the removable heating plate is cast iron with directions molded into the cast iron. The roller is made of cast iron with a ventilated hollow handle Pat’s 1880, the fluting roller is nickel-plated. The cast iron slug heating plate would be heated the stove and then placed inside the fluting iron base.
The cuff, collar, etc., to be ironed would be moistened and laid over the grooved base. Then the heated iron would be rolled over the cloth and the linen would be perfectly pressed with rows of narrow flutes or pleats. The weight of the iron and the heat would do most of the work, and compared to pleating and pressing the narrow ruffles individually, this was a labor-saving device.
