HISTORY:
Early Life
Born in 1955 in Connecticut, Andrew Fezza initially studied biology and sociology at Boston College, intending to pursue dentistry. A trip to Florence inspired him to pivot into fashion, leading him to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, where he met his wife and collaborator, Marilyn.
Career Timeline
Launch and Growth (Late 1970s–1980s)
Fezza began as a design assistant for Schrader Sport while creating knitwear in his spare time. In 1979, he and Marilyn launched their menswear and leather sportswear label from a Greenwich Village apartment. A women's line followed in 1984, designed by Marilyn.
The “Firma” Era and Groupe GFT Partnership
In the late 1980s, Fezza partnered with Gruppo GFT's U.S. arm to launch his Firma line. Designed to offer European-style tailoring at lower prices (~$300–400), it became a commercial success and cemented Fezza’s reputation as a relatable alternative to Armani. By 1992, the brand grew to around $21 million in annual sales
Awards & Legacy
Last recipient of the American Coty Award for Menswear in 1984 (previously nominated in 1981). He also received multiple Cutty Sark Awards, the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award, and the Chrysler/Cartier Stargazer Award for Best New American Designer
