Alexander McQueen vintage mohair-blend dress, from SS96 "The Hunger.”
McQueen's notorious 7th collection The Hunger - named after Tony Scott's 1983 vampire film starring Bowie & Deneuve - conjured a decaying world riddled w/ seduction & transformation. On the runway, the audience watched garments w/ feverish textures, elongated proportions & clothes that seemed almost alive. This dress sits right in that gothic universe: a draped, softly-structured (almost monastic) silhouette w/ a pleated bodice mirrored by sculpted lantern sleeves. The plush mohair-blend feels close to cashmere, its mohair synthetics mix giving the surface that feral, matted texture McQueen first experimented w/ this season.
Interestingly no other adjacent-season McQueen collection used this particular combination. The wrap belt draws the shape into the body in that unmistakable early-McQueen way - gentle at first glance, but charged underneath.
As he told collaborator Sebastian Pons just before the show, he “wanted to break some rules and do something a bit shocking" - the worm corset was the headline, but pieces like this are the real spell, wrapping the body in something softer yet no less unsettling.
Size: approx US 6 / S-M (no size tag; based on mannequin). Measurement estimates avail upon request
Very good vintage condition; light surface wear consistent w/ age.
