W. E. BLACKHURST
There may never have been another funeral like "The Planting of 'Pruny' O'Lan-ney"; another poem as timely as "Generation Gap," or one so sincerely the expression of a man's true feelings and love of nature as "I Need to Go to the Woods."
Homespun philosophy; thoughts and memories from his alert mind and observing eye; characters drawn from people he had known; incidents from events in which he had participated; poems from the heart all are combined in Afterglow,
a collection of
poems and short stories from the now silent pen of
"Tweard" Blackhurst.
Preceded by books on log-ging, sawmilling, a mighty mountain, and Cass in fiction and history, this volume gives a keener insight into the real man and reflects his intense love of God, Nature, and Fel-lowman.
None of the poems contained in Afterglow have previously been published. Some of the stories have appeared through the years in periodicals and newspapers.
Even as he wrote his last will and testament, the subtle
humor so characteristic of Warren Blackhurst was pres-ent:
"That which I gathered in life
was mine.
I leave it now, with this added
line:
That whosoever shall block
my desire,
Has my best wishes for a hot
hell fire!"
Warren Blackhurst was a lay preacher, a life-long Sunday school teacher, Cass Railroad commentator, County Com-missioner, active Conserva-tionist, and a recognized authority on the subjects about which he wrote; but, above all, he was a TEACHER.
