Handwoven by Tonga artisans in the Binga region of Zimbabwe, this basket features a strong chevron pattern created from tightly coiled ilala palm and natural fiber dyes. Tonga baskets were traditionally made as winnowing platters used in daily grain preparation, and this form is still instantly recognizable in the gentle curve and broad open surface.
This basket measures approximately 17 inches across. The weave is tight and well-executed with balanced, even lines, and the chevron design has a clear rhythm that reads beautifully when hung on a wall. The tones are warm and natural, ranging from light straw to deep brown. Condition is excellent with no breaks or structural issues.
It displays beautifully on its own or as part of a grouped wall arrangement, and brings an organic, sculptural presence to a room.
