Two (2) Excellent, 1901-1904, U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (CAC), 49th Company Insignia Pin Badges.
This pair of antique service insignia designates the Army Coast Artillery, 49th Company, stationed at Ft. Columbus, a coastal bastion fort on Governors Island in New York Harbor, within New York City. From 1806 to 1904 it was named Fort Columbus, it is now named Ft. Jay.
The full sized Insignia badges measure 1 3/8" x 1 7/8" x 3/16" deep, with secure C-Clasps.
Enlisted men of the coast artillery initially used a stubby crossed cannon, patterned after
the 1895 artillery insignia. The addition of numbers below the cannons identified the numbered independent companies. The cannon pins were finished in black for the olive drab field uniform and
gold for the dress blue coat.
The 1901 “fat” style cannon insignia was only manufactured for the first 126 companies, the black finish made only as a pin back.
