The oval, double-layer, openwork base is made of gold plate over brass and features flowing repousse leaf, flower, and grape bunch designs. This type of brooch was used to secure a sash at a lady's hip during the late 1800s when it was the fad to wear a sash over the shoulder and across the bosom (imitating Queen Victoria), or around the waist became popular.
