Albert Nippon became a popular name in American fashion during the 1970s and 1980s, primarily recognized for its elegant and sophisticated women’s clothing. The brand initially focused on women's dresses, founded by designer Albert Goldberg and his wife Pearl, especially for the professional and formal wear markets.
Albert Nippon gained widespread acclaim for creating timeless pieces that blended style with functionality. The dresses were well-crafted, featuring simple yet elegant lines, and often used high-quality fabrics like silk and wool. The brand became known for its fit, comfort, and use of vibrant colors and prints, making it a favorite among women seeking stylish business attire or evening wear.
Born in Philadelphia, Pearl got her start in the business when she opened a women’s dress shop with her sister, Dorothy, when she was only 19 years old. She married Albert Nipon in 1953 and started designing maternity clothes when she was pregnant and couldn't find anything that she wanted to wear. Under the label Ma Mère, she designed an innovative maternity clothing line, including the first one-piece maternity dress. That company eventually had 100 stores across the US.
Her signature designs featured high-end fabric and design elements such as pleating, smocking, pussycat bows, ruffles, & flounces.
They had it all! And then he lost it all!
