Nicolas Robert (1614-1685) was a French artist known for his exquisite botanical and zoological illustrations. He was born in the city of Saumur in western France and trained as an artist in Paris.
Robert became a member of the prestigious Académie Royale des Sciences in 1666, where he served as a botanical illustrator for the academy's publication "Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire des Plantes." He was also appointed as the official painter and engraver for the Jardin du Roi (Royal Garden), where he produced numerous illustrations of plants and animals.
Robert's botanical illustrations were characterized by their high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and he was particularly skilled at depicting the subtle variations in plant structure and texture. His zoological illustrations were similarly meticulous, and he often depicted animals in lifelike poses and with intricate shading and texture.
