Vintage 1988 Tuva Carved Agalmatolite Stone Bison / Buffalo Sculpture
This hand-carved stone sculpture depicts a recumbent bison with a unique stylized, ribbed texture. This is a special piece of Native Siberian folk art that is fully signed and dated from the late Soviet era. While traditional Tuvan carvers usually focus on horses or local mountain wildlife, this bison is a much more unusual and scarce subject matter.
The underside features hand-engraved inscriptions in Cyrillic and Tuvan script:
* Artist: Каган-оол А. С. (Kagan-ool A. S.)
* Title: "Сарыг" ("Saryg" / Yellow)
* Location & Date: г. Кызыл. 1988г. (Kyzyl, Capital of the Republic of Tuva, 1988)
Provenance:
This piece comes directly from the estate of James "Jim" Olson, the long-time Chief of Exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Olson spent 27 years overseeing the museum's famous habitat dioramas and collected authentic regional art and geologic specimens during his global travels.
Dimensions: Approximately 3" Long x 2.75" High.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or damage to the stone.
