Title: Authentic Vintage Mexican Folk Art Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Old Men) Papier-Mâché Festival Mask Provenance: From the estate collection of Jim Olson, the distinguished longtime Chief of Exhibits for the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (LACMNH). Mr. Olson spent 27 years traveling internationally to curate accurate cultural artifacts, ethnographic displays, and world-class dioramas for the museum. This piece was acquired firsthand as a true, field-collected ceremonial artifact rather than a commercial tourist souvenir. Item Details & Specifications: • Culture/Region: Michoacán, Mexico (Purepecha region) • Character: El Viejito (The Little Old Man) • Material: Layered, handmade papier-mâché (paper mache), polychrome pigments, and authentic applied animal hide/fur. • Dimensions: Approximately 9 1/2" Height x 8" Width • Condition: Beautiful vintage/antique condition. This mask shows wonderful, authentic field wear consistent with ceremonial use and age. The painted features (vibrant rosy cheeks, white stylized eyebrows, and distinctive upward-gazing blue eyes) remain vivid. The original animal hide hair and beard are intact. There is minor chipping to the paper edge along the top border from handling and natural aging—please review all high-resolution photos carefully as they form part of the description. An incredible museum-provenance addition to any Mexican Folk Art or anthropological mask collection.
