Shepard's was Providence, RI's department store from 1903-1974. Own a bit of history in this fabulous coat! Full-length coat has 3/4 sleeves to show off your gloves, my dear. This style was called a clutch coat, meaning that its only closure was the wearer's hand. Or wear it open or even belted. No fabric content label is present. The label says "montego doeskin." The Fabric Atlas says that doeskin was typically a twill-woven wool used in luxury garments and prized for its soft, velvety feel. It has the kind of heavy rayon or acetate lining that no one seems to make anymore. Another interior label says this coat was ethically made. Pretty face-framing collar has some hand stitching on it. Interesting angled front seams lead to 2 front pockets. Color is black. Condition is good vintage: no holes, stains, smells, pills, moth damage. Lining including pockets is intact, with very minor abrasion in a few spots near the label. Only one side of the Shepherd's label is securely sewn on. It has been dry-cleaned on my watch. I bought this from a vendor at Brimfield MA Antique Market years ago and wore it through all but the coldest weather for several winters. It's time for it to join a new closet. There is plenty of life and style left in this coat! Why wear a typical nylon puffer when you can step out in style in this warm vintage coat? You certainly won't see it on everyone else. Chest (closed) approx. 26" flat. Back neck to hem approx. 44"
