Vintage Manipur Handwoven Cotton Shawl Red Tribal Stripe Fringe India Wrap Throw

This is a handwoven cotton shawl sold through the Panthoibi Manipur Emporium in New Delhi, with the original emporium tag still attached. Panthoibi is the Manipur state emporium in Connaught Place, operating under the state's Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles. The shawl has a deep red ground with wide bands of woven patterning in white, cobalt blue, green and orange, arranged in stacked geometric rows across both ends. The fringe is knotted in red along the plain edges and shifts to multicolor across the patterned sections. A center seam runs the length of the piece where two loom widths were joined, the signature of cloth woven on a narrow loin loom and stitched together. It measures approximately 37 inches wide by 72 inches long, fringe included. The tag is hand-marked in pencil with the shop's particulars, code and price, and is still stapled in place.
