It was originally released on April 23, 1971 on the Rolling Stones new label, Rolling Stones Records. The album featured a back to basics approach for the Rolling Stones with most songs simply featuring drums, guitar, bass, and percussion. In the US, the album hit #1 within days of release, where it stayed for four weeks. The album spent a total of 69 weeks on the Billboard 200. The original Grammy-nominated cover artwork by Andy Warhol, showed a picture of a man in tight jeans, and had a working zipper that opened to reveal underwear fabric. The cover was expensive to produce, so they sourced the functional metal zippers from a smaller New York City-based company named Cort Zipper, which offered a sustainable price. Later re-issues featured just the outer photograph of the jeans.
