Published after the Sixth World Youth Festival but before Sputnik — in the brief window when Soviet cultural diplomacy was at its peak confidence before the space race changed everything. No Sputnik reference appears in its pages. The cover features a full-color portrait of a Ukrainian woman in traditional embroidered dress and floral wreath. Two articles feature Sergei Konenkov — known as “the Russian Rodin” — including an essay written in his own voice on page 35. Konenkov’s wife Margarita is alleged to have conducted a love affair with Albert Einstein while reportedly working for Soviet intelligence, making this a primary source document connected to one of Cold War history’s most dramatic untold stories.
