1883 Holman's Edition Pictorial Family Bible, A. J. Holman & Co., Philadelphia. Massive leather folio, 10.25 x 13 x 4.25 in., approx. 12 lbs. Both original metal clasps present and working, all edges gilt, heavy gilt cover and spine decoration.
Full-page steel plates including Gustave Dore (engraved by John C. McRae) and Vernet's Daniel in the Den of Lions, chromolithographed illuminated leaves, a hand-colored folding map of Modern Jerusalem, and an illustrated Bible dictionary.
Completed family record: Brevard D. Springs married S. Carrie Blackmon at Charlotte, NC, Dec. 17, 1884, signed by Rev. James H. Thornwell of Fort Mill, SC. Five children recorded 1885-1894 at Fort Mill and Charlotte, including Marguerite Clarkson, Blandina Baxter, Esther White and Eli Baxter Springs. Deaths pages blank. A named, dated Southern family Bible.
All laid-in ephemera is included: a lock of infant hair dated 1899, mourning clippings, Mrs. B. D. Springs' Charlotte stationery, a 1931 missionary letter from Taichow China, 1931 letters to and from Eli Springs 2nd at the NY Cotton Exchange, a 1927 ordination program, a Saluda NC postcard, and SC obituary clippings. The last photo is a composite of most of it. More scans on request.
Condition: Leather rubbed with some loss at corners, joints and spine ends. Text block tight, no loose sections. Pages clean, lightly toned, very mild scattered foxing. No odor, mold or water damage. Please see all photos.
