Late Victorian Shell Cameo (c. 1890–1905) Entirely Hand-Assembled Antique
This is a stunning, authentic Late Victorian cameo brooch, hand-carved from premium Sardonyx/Emperor Shell, which was favored at the turn of the century for its durability and versatility. This piece depicts a classical follower of Bacchus, the god of wine. She is beautifully identified by the intricate grape clusters and vine leaves hand-carved into her hair—a popular and highly collectible motif in the Victorian era.
- Size: 2 inches tall, 1.25 inches wide.
- Weight: 11.75 grams
- Hallmarks: None, which is consistent with 19th-century American and European jewelry (e.g. handmade and not legally required to be stamped).
- Metal: Acid tested as 10K Gold as (unmarked, which is typical for this era). The frame is non-magnetic and features a beautiful, twisted-rope border.
- Material: Genuine shell. The back is professionally flattened and polished, a sign of a premium carving.
- Hardware: Features a period-correct hand-soldered tube hinge and a traditional C-clasp. All mechanisms function properly.
- Condition: Excellent antique condition. The shell shows beautiful natural "crazing" (fine hairline growth lines) in the translucent background, which is a hallmark of genuine, aged shell and does not affect the integrity of the subject carving. The hinge and clasp are in perfect, smooth working order.
