A simply exquisite vintage men’s silk nagajuban kimono robe, featuring a striking dual-dye technique: The lower portion boasts a stunning, fluid Bokashi (graduated ombre dyeing) color transition from a soft slate blue into a deep navy. The upper back is adorned with an intricate mountain landscape rendered in traditional Kanoko Shibori. The silk fabric is remarkably lightweight, fluid, and soft to the touch. Perfect for summer.
True Kanoko Shibori is an incredibly labor-intensive, intricate technique where each tiny square dot is bound entirely by hand with thread before dyeing to resist the color, creating a wonderful, puckered texture.
Features a traditional, hand-basted navy haneri (protective collar cover). These visible basting stitches are a classic element of authentic Japanese garment care, allowing the collar to be easily removed or swapped, but it perfectly complements the deep navy ombre hem as is, so I left it untouched. You can carefully remove the basting stitches if you’d prefer it without.
Mid-to-Late 20th Century piece that belonged to my late father-in-law, made during the Showa era (70’s/80’s). It measures 26” across (from the back) armpit to armpit, and is 53” long, shoulder to hem. (Will not reach floor length on a taller than average man.) Mens kimonos are defined by their inner sleeves, which are not vented.
Excellent VTG Condition. The exterior is impeccable. The cream silk lining has some discoloration, commensurate with age.
