VINTAGE FRENCH HANDMADE POINT DE BEAUVAIS BILLFOLD/EYEGLASS CASE MATCHING SET These were owned by my grandmother and passed down to my mother and then myself. Known for superior craftsmanship, this classic French handmade women's billfold/wallet and matching eyeglass/spectacle case (porte-lunettes) features a striking combination - and rare hybrid - of dense micro seed beadwork and colorful raised matching pattern embroidery in pinks, blues, greens, and golds of swirling floral rococo-style motifs. Note the intact tag, <<Made in France Hand Made>>. Billfold is lined in heavy moiré type fabric; eyeglass case is lined in black satin. The embroidery technique is a combination of bead embroidery and stitchery or, more precisely in French vintage contexts, ‘couched’ micro-beading (or glass seed-beading) achieved by laying beads in lines and tacking them down, combined with Point de Beauvais (tambour) embroidery or Lunéville hook work. This hybrid technique was popular in French fashion accessories from the late 19th to mid-20th century, especially for evening bags, clutches, and small items like billfolds. It blends the sparkle of beadwork with the elegance of fine embroidery. Today, these pieces are collected for their craftsmanship.
