Large (approximately 9 inches tall) Cantonese Famille Rose lidded jar. This jar is unmarked, and is estimated to be from the 1880s.
Famille Rose porcelain, known in Chinese as "fen cai" (powder colors), emerged during the Qing Dynasty, particularly flourishing in the 18th century. This style is characterized by its use of opaque pastel enamels, which allowed for softer, more subtle color palettes compared to earlier overglaze techniques. These decorative jars, often referred to as ginger jars, were originally used for storing spices, tea, or other precious goods. Over time, they became highly sought after as decorative items in Western homes, particularly during the Victorian era and into the 20th century. Their intricate designs and vibrant colors made them a symbol of exoticism and luxury, and they continue to be collected today for their aesthetic appeal and historical significance.
This jar had lovely detail and well-preserved gilding. It features a typical famille rose pattern of alternating panels of bird and blossom and figural scenes. In fantastic condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.
