Antique French Miner’s Safety Lamp – Masson, Paris (Breveté S.G.D.G.)
Original antique miner’s safety lamp manufactured in Paris by Masson, marked “Constructeur – Breveté S.G.D.G.” (a historic French patent designation meaning patented without government guarantee). These lamps were used in coal mines in the late 19th to early 20th century to safely provide light underground and help detect dangerous gases such as methane.
The lamp features a metal housing with a viewing window and brass base, designed to protect the internal flame from igniting flammable mine gases. The maker’s plate on top clearly shows the Masson Paris marking.
Estimated age: late 1800s to early 1900s.
Condition: shows authentic age, patina, and wear consistent with a working industrial antique. Glass window appears present. Untested and sold as a collectible display piece.
A great piece of mining history, industrial décor, or addition to an antique tools or mining collection.
