Paperback, 272 pages, published 2007. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Very good used condition. Minor cosmetic wear to the cover, but the binding is tight and all pages are intact. No writing, no highlights, no creases on the spine.
"From the age of 5, Edwidge Danticat thought of her uncle Joseph, a charismatic pastor, as her “second father,” when placed in his care after her parents left Haiti for America. Listening to his sermons, sharing coconut-flavored ices on their walks through town, roaming through the house that held together many members of a colorful extended family, Danticat grew profoundly attached to Joseph. And so she experiences a jumble of emotions when, at twelve, she joins her parents at age 12 in NYC. She is at last reunited with two brothers, and with her mother and father, whom she struggles to remember. But she must also leave behind Joseph and the only home she’s ever known. This is the story of making a new life in a new country, while fearing for the safety of those still in Haiti as the political situation deteriorates--a true-life epic on an intimate scale--a deeply affecting story of home and family, of two men’s lives and deaths, and of a daughter’s great love for them both. Universally praised by critics and readers upon its original publication in 2007, it remains just as relevant today."
If you are a fan of Danticat's work, I also have a Posh listing for her novel "Breath, Eyes, Memory" 🙂
