This is the real deal. A charming, historical vintage English nightgown. It is worn, needs repair. The original Victorian secret! I purchased it in 1979 when I au paired, from a store in Bath U.K. that dealt strictly in Victorian & Edwardian clothing. They determined it dated from about 1890. It is charming, romantic and now, very rare. I wore it a lot. It's been in the cedar chest waiting for a major repair session, that I'm not going to get to.
All muslin cotton. Lovely tucked front panel. The lace on the neck and wrists had to be replaced eventually in about 2002. The beautiful front placket is original. Maybe Belgian or French. Beautiful hand stitching on the cuffs. Double stitching on the arm, side seams and bodice. Inside tag with owner's initials L.W. The buttons are not original.
50" from shoulder to hem.
20" across the bodice. I'm 5'8" and 126 lbs. It was always a loose, comfy fit. It can fit someone much larger.
Full disclosure -There are a number of worn, patched (on the back) or small torn places as could be expected in a 130 yr old garment.A good seamstress could make repairs.
Most of this is captured in the photos. Inspect carefully before purchasing.
It could be used as a pattern for another historically accurate nightgown, for theatre or in part of a historical display or house museum where the garment is not the focus but a part of a scene.
I would love to know it has gone to another good purpose for it's beautiful, historical value!
