Canadian Rustic Vintage Pottery Tankard Earthtone Stoneware Mug Signed John S. Dawn (SKU: 283MI)
This piece is a rustic studio stoneware tankard, very characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century Canadian pottery, especially work coming out of British Columbia, Ontario, and the Prairies.
Signed by "John S. Dawn, B.C. 70".
Style characteristics:
Wheel-thrown stoneware with visible throwing rings, left intentionally exposed to emphasize the handmade process.
Earth-tone palette: layered browns, iron reds, ochres, and a contrasting blue-green (teal) ash or celadon-style glaze at the rim.
Banding / horizontal striping, created either through slip application, oxide washes, or glaze layering while the pot was spinning.
Natural, matte to satin surface not glossy typical of functional studio pottery rather than factory ware.
Heavy, organic handle, pulled by hand and left slightly irregular, reinforcing the utilitarian, craft-forward aesthetic.
Unrefined foot ring with exposed clay, another hallmark of studio pottery.
This style aligns closely with the Canadian studio pottery movement (1960s–1980s), influenced by:
British studio pottery (Bernard Leach tradition)
Japanese mingei philosophy (beauty in utility)
West Coast and Prairie craft revival aesthetics
