The Co-operative Wholesale Society Ltd (CWS) at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England, was a significant player in the pottery industry.
The CWS logo, a wheat sheaf, and the motto 'Labor and Wait' were used as makers marks, reflecting the society's progressive stance and support for the Union in the American Civil War.
The society's pottery was produced in Longton, and some of the ware was made by the Co-op themselves, using the town name LONGTON as a reference.
