Subject: The text on the back describes the Marquis de Lafayette secretly signing his enlistment in the American "insurgents'" army in Paris on December 7, 1776, with Silas Deane and Baron de Kalb present.

At a clandestine meeting with Silas Deane, agent sent by the rebel republic which has just been proclaimed in America, the Marquis de Lafayette signs in Paris, on December 7, 1776, his enlistment in the army of the "insurgents." The Baron de Kalb, one of the first French officers recruited by S. Deane, serves as an intermediary and presents the contract, the American Agent providing strong testimony.
