These are whole pods that I use in my potpourri but they can be used for a laxative. it has been FDA approved for that use. You can make a tea from the pods and drink it. If using for that purpose or for cleansing purposes it should not be used for those with ulcers or crohns disease and not by those that are pregnant. We live beside the Yadkin River and these are everywhere on the riverbanks. If you consume the pods you shouldn't use for long periods of time.
