English Silverplate Meat Dome/food cover/ cloche. Melon form — fluted, with ornate handle and engraved floral decoration. In excellent condition with some normal expected wear- there is a small area of pitting as shown in photos but does not detract from the beauty of the piece.
Largest meat dome made by Mappin Brothers approximately 20” long x 15” wide x 9” tall-ised for keeping roasts or whole turkeys warm.
Mark reads:
MAPPIN BROTHERS
66 Cheapside, E.C.
220 Regent St. W. and Queen's Works, Sheffield
QUEEN'S PLATE - indicates Mappin’s top- grade Silverplate,
meant to compete with sterling in appearance and durability.
The hallmark dates the cloche to between 1855 and 1880.
