California Road Trip: Pismo Beach Monarchs 💫
With their bright orange and black wing patterns, Monarchs are one of the most beloved and recognized butterflies in all of North America.
Scientists study them, conservationists protect them, and young children can’t help but chase them! Their predictable seasonal migration patterns are especially fascinating. Monarchs instinctively know when it’s time to head for warmer areas as Fall and Winter approach. Some groups travel up to 3000 miles!
While the eastern monarchs overwinter in Mexico, the western monarchs head to several locations along California’s Central Coast.
The greatest numbers are found in Pismo Beach and the quaint seaside town of Pacific Grove (also known as Butterfly Town, USA). To the delight of locals and tourists alike, thousands of monarchs gather each October through February in the protected groves of Monterey pines and eucalyptus trees.
Show your love of monarchs (and all butterflies) with this beautiful beanie. 🦋
