Barkcloth, or kapa, is a thick and durable fabric with an important history in native Hawaiian’s culture. Traditional kapa is made from the bark of the wauke (mulberry) tree, although more modern versions are now often made of cotton. Traditional kapa features bold prints made with plant dyes and was used for a variety of purposes ranging from home furnishing to ceremonial use. Today, cotton barkcloth is a popular choice for durable and colorful clothing in Hawaii and vintage barkcloth is highly collectible around the world!
