I believe it is from excess glue during manufacturing assembly-I have not tried to wash or pick it off to not compromise. Fits true to size- if you are a 7.5 these might fit but I believe that if you are an 8.5 these will be a tight fit. I have a medium width foot and these fit right. Comes from a pet free and smoke free home.
