This vintage Japanese wagasa has 2 bold stripes circling the umbrella in purple with dozens of little flowers in the stripes. The 2 bold stripes are separated by a stripe in the natural color of the paper. This ring pattern on the umbrella is said to resemble a snakes' eye and is supposed to ward off evil spirits. The shaft of the wagasa has two different "settings" that allow it to be 3/4 open or fully opened, and has a coil-wrapped handle. The frame of the umbrella is made from a single piece of bamboo split into 40-50 pieces and painted a dark maroon, and the top is covered in a piece o blue fabric. Picked this up in Tokyo at a Japanese flea market and was told it was from the 70s/80s. Still in good condition with no holes in the paper. Measures 28" long and 40" wide when fully opened. Can still be used in it's original format or just as decoration.
