In ancient Egypt, The Book of the Dead was a collection of mortuary texts made up of spells or magic formulas. It was placed in tombs and believed to protect the deceased in the afterlife. Two symbols were integral to ancient Egyptian beliefs of the afterlife: Anubis, Lord of the Dead, the deity of cemeteries and embalming as well as the protector of graves, and the Scarab beetle, an amulet of protection against disease, death, and a symbol of resurrection. The bottom layer features a larger flying scarab beetle on a silver chain. There is a nugget chip of lapis lazuli (the Egyptians frequently used this in making amulets) at the end of the extension chain. The top layer is adjustable from 16.25 to 21.75 inches, and the connected bottom layer is adjustable from 19.75 to 24.25 inches (either or both can be made shorter or longer upon request).
