This is a rare back button from a United States Engineer Officer's collection during the Civil War era. The button features Albert# EG-3 Lewis & Tomes Extra Rich with Eagle holding banner in his beak that said, “Essayons” over castle, situated over the water and with sunburst at lower left corner. “Essayons” means let us try, which was the motto for the US Army Corp of Engineers since 1819. This item is an original period piece and a must-have for collectors of rare back buttons. The button is in excellent shape and has been well-preserved over the years.
