A Mid-Victorian gold fill and agate brooch. This lovely Grand Period (1861 to 1885) floral etched brooch is a fine example of Mid-Victorian jewelry. This brooch features a bezel set oval agate with tones of carmel and cream. Closure is a handmade C-clasp. In fine antique condition.
The Grand Period (1861 to 1885) was the second period of Victorian jewelry and saw a sharp change in design from delicate to bold. It also saw the introduction of "imitation jewelry" (jewelry made of material other than gold and precious gemstones). Gold fill became popular and agate remained so due to the English/Scottish connection. Brooches were commonly worn as "day wear".
