Pair of Chinese Sancai Foo Dog Statues - Republic of China (1912-1949)

Sancai Foo Dogs, also known as Guardian Lions, hold significant cultural & spiritual symbolism. In Feng Shui, it is believed that displaying foo dogs can help protect your home or business from negative energy, to also enhance luck, health, & wealth. They originally were created as guardian lions & were often placed in front of temples, palaces, homes, & businesses to protect against evil spirts & misfortune. Foo dogs also represent strength, power, & protection. This matching pair of polychrome enameled porcelain foo dogs were created during the Republic of China era, also known as mainland China, between 1912 to 1949. The bottom of the female foo dog states "MADE IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA". The male foo dog called "Ky" is guarding the structure, while the female foo dog known as "Lan" is protecting the dwellers. Each foo dog is seated on a plinth that is brown with an intricate design. The male is balancing a front paw on a yellow ball with stars, while a yellow pup plays under the foot of its mother. The foo dog's surface colors are green, yellow, & pigments of purple, red, & blue. A yellow mane & tail with yellow, purple, and red hair protrudes from the top & back of each foo dog's head. A multicolor collar with tassels & adornments highlights the green body & feet. Each foo dog's green head has an open mouth displaying sharp white teeth & a red & white tongue. Approx: 8 1/4" x 3 1/4 in x 1 3/4 in. No cracks or damage. In like new condition.
