Cup. Hand thrown & altered. special firing. Beautiful. Artist J. Gandee. This is an early work of hers, from undergraduate. She made this amazing body of work, wheel thrown, altered, wonderfully decorated with white liner glaze, and a copper based glaze & RIO (red iron oxide) decoration fired in a traditional salt kiln. The salt firing process imparts a flushed surface, orange peel glossy texture- & subtle variations- from the path of the heat & vapors through the kiln. Fantastic! Signed on the bottom by the artist. Its calked a second bc it has two blemishes in the glaze inside. Hand made high end ceramics is a very difficult process with a high loss rate. We keep our ‘seconds’ & they sell at a reduced price- and are often more beautiful or just as fine as firsts. Microwave & dishwasher safe, but do not thermal shock it in an oven or with actively boiling water. This is from my ceramic art collection I am beginning to sell off.
