Moonstone has translucent white color with a white sheen similar to "moonshine" that rolls or flows over the stone when rotated, hence the name "moonstone." The sheen is caused by light diffraction within layers of feldspar. Moonstone, also known as Hecatolite, is a feldspar and variety of Orthoclase (with Albite inclusions). Its name was derived by A.G. Werner in 1780 due to the shimmering effect that occurs on the stone’s surface during light diffraction.
