Degas, the great painter of dancers and documentarian of the underside of the Belle Epoque era, repeatedly refuted any attempts to associate himself with the Impressionist school. Yet his expressive palette and deft skill at capturing the effects of light (not to mention his repeated presentation at the independent Impressionist exhibitions) secured him a leading role in the artistic vanguard. What is indisputable, however, is that Degas did not share the themes and bourgeois concerns of his contemporaries Monet or Renoir. Rather, Degas’ Paris was a sordid and exploitative world of submission and subjugation – a grim atmosphere that bred corruption and cruelty. In The Racecourse, Amateur Jockeys one can easily make out the energetic, magnetic silhouettes, brimming with vigor and immediacy, that would come to shape Toulouse-Lautrec’s artistic style a decade later.
