I totes get why you call these boots and the black ones that are basically just like these "gladiators", but the thing that caused me to fall in love with them is that they are very similar to the boots that (British) Victorian ladies wore. I don't know if you are familiar with the sub-genre of science fiction called "steampunk", but it is a pretty big deal right now.
