Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. In 2015, more than 33,000 Americans died as a result of an opioid overdose, including prescription opioids, heroin, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl. That same year, an estimated 2 million people in the US suffered from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, and 591,000 suffered from a heroin use disorder. Opioid overdoses increased 30% from 07/16 - 09/17 in 45 states.

lasvegasnv@luvjojos_closet Great post and so very true. The addiction includes millions of elderly who easily receive opiate and sleeping pill prescriptions from their Dr as a cure all for everything but creates an addiction. Thank u for your post.

Our police dept is only part time if that tells you anything. But the police, when they are working, have to carry narcan. At least once a month there is another death…

luvjojos_closet@cupofjoe It is ravaging our country. Most people, I have spoken to, look at an addict as lower or less than them. The attitude that addicts should just pull themselves together, they are not my problem, stop being so selfish, I could go on and on. I am not sure if I am wording this right but....addicts are being seen as the drug they use and not as the person stuck inside the drug.

luvjojos_closetI have never met or heard of an addict that wasn't using that drug to numb something inside themselves. I am in no way saying that addicts are not selfish and all of those things. But that is the drug not the person. Unfortunately that is impossible to explain to a child. When I see these kids trapped, I picture a syringe with a drop coming out with a face inside that drop. That is their prison.

kgsouthbeachAs a recovering addict (Opiates) I cannot tell you just how true that post is. I've been sober for six years, but my husband and I are still paying for the costs incurred while I was using. It is absolutely the WORST thing that can happen to someone. Desperation, loneliness, anxious, cravings so bad you cannot think of ANYTHING else and you will do anything to get your next dose. It's HORRIBLE! I was NOT the same person when I was using.

luvjojos_closet@findingdoc1 Thank you for sharing. I think it is important to put faces, names and experiences out there. This is a horrible epidemic that is only getting worse. If we can start talking about the person/people who are fighting this just maybe we can raise awareness. Heck we can stop seeing the drugs and START SEEING THE PERSON that is stuck inside.

luvjojos_closet@cupofjoe @findingdoc1 I am very sorry for your losses. I lost a son myself and I know the void it leaves in your heart. My oldest son went thru a period, as a teenager, of using opioids and self mutilation. Luckily we were able to have a judge admit him to a facility for help. In PA the law states that any person of the age 14 or older is responsible for their own mental health. Which is another thing that needs to change.

You think "just once and then I'll be done again" but that one time could be your last. I put my parents through so many sleepless nights, it makes me sick to think about, especially now that I have my own little one. topsyturvycnsynI work with high risk pregnant mothers and it is heartbreaking how many of these women are addicts. NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome) is a horrible set of symptoms affecting the newborns of these mothers but because of more awareness & healthcare professionals working hard to treat mother & baby there is more opportunity to help these families. xoxoxo Shelley

Addiction just doesn’t happen, addicts carry so much pain around with them, support and the will to live is the biggest gift we can give them.

Any kind of addiction hurts the people that the addict themselves care and love for the most along with killing themselves inside not even realizing that they themselves are walking around everyday dying a slow painful death and feeling non existant with nothing but darkness consumes them. Once an addict becomes a victim of an addiction or disease their family and loved ones usually think they can help them and aometimes it does help with rehabs and such but the alternatives are jails or institutions if were lucky or death which is the easy way out for anyone with alcoholism or drug addiction.
