mmcleary@craziness01 Hello, there is a discreet elastic band that goes across the back of the dress so there is some stretch. The armpit to armpit measurements are apx. 16.5" in the large and 17.5" XL laying flat. I also have a XXL and that is 19.5" armpit to armpit
