Is the 30" the waist of the jeans? Sorry I never tried on pants from free people. I vary from 25-28 depending on brand.

@grotzke3 30" is the actual measurement around the waistband(i measure because I get a lot of requests for this on all of the jeans i sell)The size on the tag is 26, which I find to be accurate since I'm a 28/size4 and I tried on a pair of these and they were too tight.
