You're right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it goes deeper than external looks. When I was 17-19, (the years after high school before college when southern girls are taught manners and etiquette) one of the things I still remember was: "A lady is beautiful. A woman can be made to look pretty, nothing else!" Of course I don't remember who said that!!!!

I wore it once at one of our own Christmas parties. It's never even been outside!! Hopefully, someone can use an elegant gown.
