For sale, a RARE and VINTAGE, HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE set of 5 Apothecary Pharmaceutical Weight Coins / Tokens from the late 19th century to early 20th Century, made in the United Kingdom. The scale I used in the photos are not accurate to the 1000's of a gram, so please use a little discretion in what I measured the coins at. The lot contains 5 coins / weight tokens. * 2 Drachms - H Troemner, Phila - 7.659 Grams * 1 Drachm - H. T. Phila (shortened version of H. Troemner) - 3.796 Grams * 2 Scruples - H. T. Phila - 2.509 Grams * 1/2 Drachm - H.T. (H. Troemner) - 1.897 Grams * 1 Scruple - H.T. (H. Troemner) - 1.262 Grams Troemner is the manufacturer, and Phila stands for Philadelphia This set comes in a little leather zipper bag, with "Alpe D'Huez" written on it. Pharmacists used these weight coins during the late 19th and early 20th century for pharmaceutical purposes as electronic scales were not yet invented. It measured exact amounts of medicine for customers. Using a beam scale, the coins would be on one side and the medicine on the other. Once the beam balanced, you knew you had 2 Scruples of weighted medicine for example (2.5 grams). These coins / weights are mostly made with copper and bronze, and were often gold plated to make it easier to read by the pharmacist. Needless to say, this will make for the most perfect gift, or for the collector of rare and vintage and antique pieces. Can't go wrong with a good set of 5 like this.
