CorningWare, was originally a brand name for a unique glass-ceramic (Pyroceram) cookware resistant to thermal shock. It was first introduced in 1958 by Corning Glass Works. . CorningWare is a quintessentially MidCentury kitchen icon.
Corning Glass Works was founded in 1851 by Amory Houghton in Somerville, Mass, originally as the Bay State Glass Co.It later moved to Brooklyn, NY & operated as Brooklyn Flint Glass Works. The company moved again to its ultimate home & eponym, the city of Corning, NY in 1868 under leadership of the founder's son, Amory Houghton Jr. The company was named Corning Glass Works until 1989.[3] Corning divested its consumer product lines (including CorningWare & Visions Pyroceram-based cookware, Corelle Vitrelle tableware, and Pyrex glass bakeware) in 1998 by selling the Corning Consumer Products Co subsidiary, now known as Corelle Brands, to Borden, but still holds about 8% interest.
