Vtg Native Art 1st Nation Face Profile Wood Carving Signed Rocky Mathias Joe 84
This left facing side profile portrait was carved from one piece of wood. It depicts a man with his hair tied back by a medallion. The medallion looks like a sun. It has a leather hanging hook at the back and is ready to hang. This portrait measures 14.6" x 7.6". It is signed Rocky Mathias Joe '84. Rocky Mathias Joe is a close descendant of both Chief Joe Capilano (AKA Sa7plek or Kiyapalanexw) (c. 1854-1910) and Chief Mathias Joe (1887-1966) of the Squamish Nation. The Squamish Nation is a Coast Salish Nation with a strong culture and a rich history that spans millennia.
The front of this carving is in excellent condition for a vintage plaque. It's made out of very sensitive wood and is easily marked, even by a fingernail. It has surface marks from some of its admirers over the years. The back shows some hairline splits as pictured.
