If you have never seen a Fedoskino Russian lacquer box, at first glance, you will become intrigued by its striking beauty. In order to preserve a century's old art form, the Fedoskino school near Moscow opened in 1931 to teach miniature painting. This trinket box has a papier-mache construction which is then applied with black lacquer on the outside of the box and red lacquer inside. The box cover is fastened with a hinge on the left side. Hand-painted using layers of oil paint, the gold segments have pure gold leaf underneath creating a shimmery glow. This scene features a peddler showing his trunk of gorgeous scarves to a lovely lady. At the bottom of the scene, under magnification, you will see Fedoskino 1987 and the artist's signature as shown in the pictures. The box is nice and smooth and the painting is in excellent condition. Note there is some wear showing on the black lacquer particularly the bottom of the box, please zoom and review all pictures for condition.
The box measures 6.25" x 4 3/8" x 2".
